Bronchitis is just as easily and simply relieved and cured by the use of the antisepticizing treatments as so many other ailments and diseases already mentioned or to be mentioned.
As a rule, just one or two antisepticizing treatments will restore the patient’s confidence and prove to the patient that he will quickly get well under the continued use of these treatments. The cough, chest pains and irritation and all other discomforts are quickly relieved and soon disappear under the frequent, proper use of the antisepticizing treatments. The patient, as a rule, gets well quickly.
Many people cannot understand just why treatments to the interior of the nose will relieve numerous complaints and discomforts inside the chest. The fact re-mains and can quickly and easily be proven to be so, that these nasal treatments do quickly relieve and re-move these various chest complaints of rawness, irritation, cough, expectoration, etc. Very frequently just one or two antisepticizing treatments will completely relieve a stubborn case of bronchitis.
Pneumonia
March 19, 1930, the writer wrote a treatise on the common chest diseases which was published in the Medical Journal and Record, entitled, “The Prevention and Treatment of the Common Cold and Pneumonia by the Therapy and Methods of the Common Foundation System of Medicine.” These same methods as described herein were applied to the prevention and treatment of the common chest diseases. The greater accuracy of prevention and cure of pneumonia and other inflammatory conditions of the lungs by these methods was described. When using these methods, the same general optimism is permissible in preventing and treating diseases of the lungs as diseases of other parts of the body.
As Dr. Osier stated years ago, “Pneumonia is the captain of death.” That such a large percentage of deaths due to pneumonia is avoidable, will quickly become evident to all those who use this therapy in all diseases. It is prevention more so than attempts at cure after the disease has set in and obtained a strong foot-hold on the patient’s life, that will lower the mortality rate (deaths) in pneumonia, whether in cases of pneumonia or cases of pneumonia following major surgical operations or following any other diseases. The surgeon especially will find that deaths from pneumonia which so frequently follow major operations and often are the principal causes for failure of his work, will be prevented in most cases and, as a result, his failures will be turned into successes.
Any post-operative patient complaining of the slightest cough, should immediately be given a few antisepticizing treatments and pneumonia will be prevented. In fact, for the same reasons the antisepticizing treatments should be used preoperatively ; or better still, as a general rule, they should be used before the operation in all cases as a preventive of pneumonia and other complications.
Pneumonia as a complication, following any operation or any sickness or illness should and can be prevented by this therapy.
The writer describes a case of pneumonia in a man 85 years of age. The course and treatment and speedy recovery of this case is given as an example and type for all cases of pneumonia. The temperature falls rapidly under the use of the antisepticizing treatments alone. Surgery on the nose should be avoided if at all possible, as much as we should avoid any other surgery on a patient ill with pneumonia. As a rule, all that is necessary in all cases of pneumonia is the proper, frequent use of the antisepticizing treatments.
Illustrative case: A man 85 years old, in the past four or five days has been suffering with a heavy cough with much expectoration and increasingly difficult breathing, which came on rather suddenly and has been steadily growing worse. The breathing was becoming more and more difficult daily until the evening the writer saw him, he was actually choking and gasping for breath. His hands were blue (cyanotic) ; he had great difficulty in bringing up the pus in his chest ; and complained bitterly of a distressing, terrifying feeling and of extreme nervousness. His hands trembled excessively; he was unable to take water or other fluids without spilling. His temperature was rising steadily; at the time the writer saw him, it was above 103. He had not slept much in the last week due to the shortness of breath. The patient was unable to lie down in bed, but preferred to sit in a chair.
Within five minutes after the first antisepticizing treatment, the patient was able to breathe easily and fairly comfortably. He said that the choking was greatly relieved; he was no longer gasping for breath. Within another ten or fifteen minutes after this first antisepticizing treatment, the patient’s color changed from a dark, pale, purplish color to a pleasant, pink complexion. The feeling of extreme nervousness and the distressing and terrifying feeling soon disappeared. The bluish color of the skin of the hands was replaced by a nice pink. The patient slept more comfortably that night, woke up only once to clear his throat and to cough, then fell asleep again and slept till 11 A.M. It was interesting to note the patient’s remarks. He said, “I certainly did not come any too soon. I felt desperate and at the end of my rope.” This replacement of confidence in a patient of his age was all done within a period of less than twenty-four hours. One day he was dying in the grip of a rapidly advancing pneumonia, and the next day he was practically well and thinking of returning to business. It was interesting to note that the excessive tremor of his hands, which trembling made it impossible for him to take milk or other fluid without spilling them, was mostly all gone within twenty-four hours ; the patient’s hands were steady and he could help himself to fluids without spilling them. So, you see, if we do not wait until the terminal stages, old age is no bar to obtaining good results in and even curing pneumonia.
Coughs
Now let us take up coughs due most commonly to pharyngitis, bronchitis, laryngitis, etc. A cough is only a symptom and may be caused by many diseases. The commonest causes of cough are bronchitis, throat and larynx (vocal cord) inflammation, inflammation of the lungs and pneumonia. A few antisepticizing sprays simply seem to wipe away the cough when due to any of these diseases. It is difficult and puzzling to some patients to understand why a simple spray to the nose will relieve a bad bronchitis and severe cough, but the use of this therapy will quickly prove and convince the patient.
Many people complain of colds on the chest with severe cough, pain in the chest, and expectoration. Many imagine that the bronchitis or chest congestion and inflammation originate inside the chest or lungs. That this idea is incorrect, can easily be proven by giving the patient an antisepticizing treatment or two and notice how quickly the chest congestion and inflammation (bronchitis) clear up and the cough, soreness, fever and all other complaints disappear. Cough due to inflammation of the throat, larynx or lungs will disappear under the steady use of the antisepticizing treatments, and if necessary, the use of some of the other methods of this system.
Laryngitis
Again the rapidity, definiteness, ease and simplicity with which beneficial results are obtained by this system become quickly evident when people suffering with laryngitis, especially of the acute type, are treated by these means. Hoarseness is quickly relieved and dispelled; this is equally true of loss of the voice. In chronic cases, which are mostly due to ulcers of the larynx, and when caused by the common germs, the same excellent results invariably follow the persistent use of these methods and therapy. Those chronic cases of laryngitis due to tuberculosis or syphilis should also have this same therapy and other means of this system in conjunction with the usual therapy and treatments commonly used in these two diseases. Results will thereby be made more certain and be more quickly obtained. Mortality and morbidity of these serious diseases of tuberculosis and syphilis of the larynx will be greatly reduced with the aid of these treatments and the other methods advised.
Edema (swelling) of the larynx due to pressure and the swelling caused by severe congestion. and inflammation around the vocal cord, is decidedly relieved and helped by the antisepticizing treatments. The choking (dyspnea) and shortness of breath caused by the edema of the larynx, are greatly relieved by the frequent use of the nasal antisepticizing treatments ; this relief is obtained in all forms of edema of the larynx, irrespective of the cause.
Asthma
The writer has found no difficulty in controlling and curing asthmatic cases by this therapy. Many asthmatic cases are stubborn and require a great deal of patience; nevertheless, when persisted in, they soon become amenable to this therapy. Most asthmatic cases yield readily and easily to this therapy. Asthmatic sufferers are also a class of patients who have extremely unstable nervous systems. It has been truly said many years ago that asthma is a nervous disease, a disease of the nerves. This statement is too general ; concretely speaking, asthma is principally a nervous disease of the vagus nerve. When one understands the vast influence of the vagus nerve on the body generally as described in this book and by our best physiologists, and correlates this with the immediate beneficial results obtained by common foundationing, then this statement about the vagus nerve can be readily understood.
Many of these sufferers will try the patience of the physician, even when using these methods. Each and every point and rule of this system must be most carefully and persistently followed. As a rule, all the surgical procedures as described for the physicians in Section II, and which consist of energetic attention to the maxillary sinuses, a careful correction of the nasal septum and repeated Gluck Respiratory Passage Operations are necessary to obtain a permanent cure. The antisepticizing treatments must be energetically used for a long period of time (a number of months). Persistency in the use of the antisepticizing treatments wins.
The antisepticizing treatments have an almost instantaneously beneficial effects on the asthmatic. Immediately on the use of the antisepticizing treatment, the patient will experience relief. The breathing becomes lighter, the heaviness or choking is greatly lessened. Very often the musical rales of the chest will disappear soon after the treatment. These beneficial effects can only be explained by the good influence which the antisepticizing treatments have on the vagus nerve.
